| Whatever you are looking for in a holiday, The Charente has more than enough to offer! |
| Sightseeing:~
The Loire isn't the only place that boasts about their beautiful
chateaux. Visit La Rochefoucauld's magnificent chateau or picnic by the
lake at chateau Javarzay in Chef Boutonne (pictured right) which is only
ten minutes away. Walk around the perimeter of the chateau at Jouhé
(one of our nearest villages.) Go and see the outstanding cathedrals of Poitiers and Angouleme or tour around the Romanesque churches and medieval abbeys. Journey to the centre of the earth at the 12th C church of Saint Jean, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. The church that was built entirely into the hillside and is one of the most spectacular sites in the Charentes. Spend a day wandering around Cognac with it's ancient streets and mansions of the brandy merchants and take a tour around one of the major cognac producers such as Hennessy, Martell or Remy Martin. |

Outdoor Activities:~
The Charente is perfect for cycling with its gently rolling countryside
and if you don't bring your own, then bikes can be hired at the nearby
towns of Mansle or Chef Boutonne. If you are feeling particularly energetic then try kayaking or canoeing or perhaps rock climbing at the tourist centre for outdoor pursuits in Lichères la Salle, (15 mins away.) It also offers hiking and rambling paths. There is nowhere better for rambling than our local woods and forests which are bordered by sunflower fields and golden wheatfields in the summertime. Spend a leisurely day playing golf or hire some horses and go pony trekking. If you are a keen fisherman then licences can easily be obtained from the tourist office and the local lakes and the rivers Peruse and Charente are teaming with fish. |

If you are lucky, one might even sit on your shoulder! The Aquarium at La Rochelle is spectacular and the Zoorama at the Forest Chizé is one of the finest zoos in France. It is set in 62 acres and has 600 animals in vast enclosures. The Nautilus waterpark in Angouleme is only ½ hour away and is an ideal place to "cool off" and have fun or try the many lakes in the area. The Coast & Green
Venice:~ About 1½ hours drive, the coast of the Poitue and
Charente is known for its long stretches of fine sand and good weather.
The Islands of Ré and Oléron are accessible and have
quaint villages and even vineyards. The renowned Fort Boyard can be seen
by boat. About an hour away are the canals of "Green Venice," which are lined with ash trees and willows and are perfect for a day of boating. The coastal marshes, once covered by sea were drained by monks in the 11th C. They dug canals, installed locks and built mills. The waterways were used to take children to school, for family outings and for transportation of livestock. They were also an excellent refuge for escaped convicts. |
